Sebarindo Hotel – For a first Bali trip, Seminyak suits restaurants and beach sunsets, Canggu suits a younger café and surf crowd, Ubud suits culture and rice-field views, and Nusa Dua or Sanur suit families who want calm water. Uluwatu suits cliff-top stays and surf.
This guide is for first-time foreign visitors staying four to ten nights. Rules and dates were checked on October 26, 2026. It does not list room rates, which change daily and by season.
Why the Area Matters in Bali
Bali’s main roads can be slow, especially around the south at busy times. Two areas that look close on a map can be a long drive apart.
Say you stay in Ubud but plan three beach days in the south. You may spend more time in a car than on the sand. Splitting the trip between two bases often works better.
Areas at a Glance
| Area | Suits | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Seminyak | dining, shopping, sunsets | busy roads, higher prices |
| Canggu | cafés, surf, longer stays | traffic and construction in places |
| Ubud | culture, nature, wellness | inland, no beach |
| Nusa Dua | families, resort stays | gated resort area, less local feel |
| Sanur | families, older travelers, calm beach | quieter evenings |
| Uluwatu | cliff views, surf beaches | spread out, needs transport |
Seminyak and Canggu for Food and Beaches
Seminyak is on Bali’s southwest coast and is known for restaurants, boutiques and beach clubs. It suits couples and friends who want plenty within walking distance.
Canggu, just north, attracts surfers and long-stay visitors. Many stays here are villas and guesthouses, so check that the property is licensed and listed on official channels.
Ubud for Culture and Nature
Ubud sits inland in Gianyar regency. It is known for traditional arts, temples, rice terraces and yoga retreats.
There is no beach, and it is cooler in the evenings than the coast. Many visitors stay two or three nights here, then move south.
Nusa Dua and Sanur for Families
Nusa Dua is a planned resort area on the southeast peninsula, with large hotels along a protected beach. It suits families who want pools, kids’ clubs and a calmer setting.
Sanur, on the east coast, has a long beachfront path and gentler water than much of the west coast. It suits families and travelers who prefer a quieter pace.
Uluwatu for Cliff-Top Stays
Uluwatu, on the far south of the Bukit Peninsula, is known for cliffs, surf breaks and the Uluwatu Temple. Many hotels here have ocean-view pools.
Places are spread out, so plan on a driver or scooter rental. Check your travel insurance covers scooters before riding one.
Rules to Plan Around
Foreign tourists pay a provincial levy of IDR 150,000 per entry to Bali, under Bali Provincial Regulation No. 6 of 2023. It is paid electronically before or on arrival.
Hotels add a regional hotel tax, capped at 10% by national law, and many add a service charge. Rates marked “++” do not include these yet.
Nyepi, Bali’s Day of Silence, closes the island for a day. In 2026, Ngurah Rai Airport closed for 24 hours from 06:00 WITA on March 19, according to the airport operator’s announcement. In 2027, Nyepi falls on Monday, March 8, according to Indonesia’s national holiday decree.
What this means for you: if your dates include Nyepi, guests stay inside their hotel for the day, so pick a hotel with on-site food and space.
Choose one or two areas based on what you want to do most days, then book hotels close to those plans.
Room rates, taxes, check-in times and hotel policies change often. Confirm the details on the hotel’s official website or in your booking confirmation before you pay.
