Where to Stay in Singapore: 5 Areas Compared

Singapore is small, but the area you pick still changes your trip. Here are five bases compared by what is nearby and who they suit,...

Hotel Guides

Sebarindo Hotel – For a first trip to Singapore, Marina Bay and the city center suit sightseers, Orchard Road suits shoppers, and Chinatown or Bugis suit travelers who want food and value close to the MRT. Sentosa works best for a resort-style family stay.

This guide is for short-stay visitors. Transport notes come from Singapore’s Land Transport Authority and Changi Airport, checked on October 25, 2026. It does not list room rates, which change daily.

The Airport Train Detail

Changi Airport’s MRT station sits on a short branch line. To reach most of the city by MRT, you change trains at Tanah Merah.

Since December 9, 2025, eastbound East-West Line trains toward Pasir Ris use a new platform at Tanah Merah, according to the LTA. Passengers transferring between that platform and the Changi Airport shuttle train now go through the station concourse.

What this means for you: allow a few extra minutes for the change, and check the LTA’s latest notices before arrival, since works on this section have closed stations for short periods.

Marina Bay for First-Timers

Marina Bay puts you near Gardens by the Bay, the waterfront promenade and the central business district. Many visitors spend most of a short trip here, so staying nearby cuts travel time.

The trade-off is cost, since this is a premium area. Say you plan to be out from morning to night; a cheaper hotel one or two MRT stops away may make more sense.

Orchard Road for Shopping

Orchard Road is Singapore’s main shopping street, lined with malls. It suits families who want food courts, supermarkets and pharmacies within a short walk.

It is a good base if shopping is a big part of the plan. If it is not, Chinatown or Bugis can offer similar access for less.

Chinatown and Bugis for Value

Chinatown is known for its hawker centers, temples and heritage shophouses. Bugis sits next to Kampong Glam, home of the Sultan Mosque and the Haji Lane area.

Both areas are on major MRT lines and close to the center. Rooms in converted shophouses can be small, so check the room size in square meters on the hotel’s official site.

Sentosa for Resort Stays

Sentosa is an island resort area south of the main city, with beaches and theme attractions. Families who plan to spend most days there save time by staying on the island.

For a trip focused on the city, Sentosa adds travel time each day. Many visitors split the stay instead: a few nights in the city, then one or two on Sentosa.

Before You Book in Singapore

Check whether your rate includes tax and service charges, often shown as “++” in Singapore. Compare the final price, not the headline rate.

Late arrival? Changi has transit hotels that do not require immigration and landside options such as YOTELAIR at Jewel. Those can be easier than a late taxi ride after a long flight.

Pick your area by where you will spend most daytime hours, then choose a hotel within a short walk of an MRT station.

Room rates, taxes, check-in times and hotel policies change often. Confirm the details on the hotel’s official website or in your booking confirmation before you pay.
