Maldives Resort Transfers: Seaplane vs Speedboat

In the Maldives, the trip from the airport to your resort can shape your first and last day. Here is how seaplanes, speedboats and domestic...

Villas & Resorts

Sebarindo Hotel – A Maldives resort is usually reached by one of three transfers from the main airport near Malé: a speedboat for nearby atolls, a seaplane for farther ones, or a domestic flight followed by a boat. The resort decides which options it offers, and the transfer often costs extra.

This guide is for travelers choosing or booking a Maldives resort. Rules come from Trans Maldivian Airways and the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority, checked on October 26, 2026. Transfer prices are set by each resort, so they are not listed here.

The Three Ways to Reach a Resort

TransferUsually used forKey limit
Speedboatresorts in atolls near Malésea conditions affect comfort
Seaplaneresorts in more distant atollsdaylight only
Domestic flight + boatresorts far from Malétwo legs, more connections

Check the resort’s official transfer page before booking. Some resorts allow only one method, so the choice may already be made for you.

Seaplanes Fly Only in Daylight

Trans Maldivian Airways, the main seaplane operator, says its seaplanes fly only between sunrise and sunset. To reach a resort the same day, it advises arriving in the Maldives by 15:30 local time.

If no international flight gets you there in time, the operator suggests a night in Malé or Hulhumalé first. The same timing matters on departure, since the earliest seaplanes follow sunrise.

What this means for you: an evening arrival on a seaplane resort usually means one extra night near the airport.

Baggage Limits on Seaplanes

The standard seaplane allowance is 25 kg per person: 20 kg in checked bags and 5 kg in hand luggage, according to Trans Maldivian Airways. Infants get no extra allowance.

No single bag can weigh more than 32 kg. Excess baggage costs US$5 per kg plus taxes, and oversized gear such as surfboards needs a charter flight.

Say you fly in on an airline that allows 30 kg checked. You may pay for 10 kg of excess on the seaplane, or US$50 plus tax (our estimate).

Speedboats and Domestic Flights

Speedboats are common for resorts in North and South Malé atolls, closer to the airport. They can run after dark, which makes late arrivals easier, but the resort sets its own schedule.

Domestic flights serve resorts in distant atolls, followed by a boat to the island. Two legs mean more chances of delay, so leave a buffer before your international flight home.

The Green Tax on Your Bill

The Maldives charges a Green Tax per tourist per day. From January 1, 2025, it is US$12 at resorts, tourist hotels and tourist vessels, according to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority.

Smaller hotels and guesthouses with 50 or fewer rooms on inhabited islands charge US$6. Children under two at check-in are exempt.

Two adults on a seven-night resort stay pay US$168 in Green Tax (our estimate). Check whether your quote already includes it.

Before You Book a Resort

Ask the resort three questions: which transfer it uses, the transfer price per person, and the latest arrival time for a same-day transfer.

Match your flights to those answers before paying a non-refundable rate. Getting the transfer wrong can cost a night of the stay you paid for.

Room rates, taxes, check-in times and hotel policies change often. Confirm the details on the hotel’s official website or in your booking confirmation before you pay.
